Jim Rimmer gets his due

With the new reissue of Jim Rimmer's autobigraphical opus Leaves from the Pie Tree as a trade edition from Gaspereau Press comes even more long overdue acknowledgment of Jim's work. A recent feature in the Vancouver Sun features some candid shots of Jim in his studio and the new issue of How magazine reviews Jim and his making of the Stern metal and digital fonts. This comes on the heels of a nice 3 part article on Flurry, the online journal from Boxcar press and the UK magazines Design week and Digital Arts in addition to several online and in print articles. The upcoming film from P22 documenting Jim and his type making process is still in progress.

The Yule Blog

What may well be the first extensive family of novelty snow Christmas / Chanukah / Eid / Kwanza / Festivus / Winter Solstice / Yuletide themed fonts: Yule. Designed by James Greishaber in his workshop in the wintry Illinois tundra (Downtown Chicago), this set of 7 fonts is perfect for greeting cards, children's holiday books, figgie pudding wrappers and surprisingly enough: even more!

P22 Yule was originally a 3 font set with only Capital letters. Yule has now has been expanded to contain 4 new fonts. These faces have a newly designed upper and lowercase with snowy variations.

Yule has an alpine look, lending itself to the thoughts of chalets and fondue. Yule Heavy Snow is blanketed in the white stuff, while Yule Light Flurries is dusted with snowflakes. With the addition of a lowercase, Yule becomes infinitely more usable. The Klein variations work well as an alternative to the classic Neuland when you need the versatility of a lowercase.

Yule contains a full Western European ASCII character set in universal OpenType format. Introductory sale for the month of December. Upgrade available for previous purchasers of the original Yule Set.

P22 Acquires Canada Type

P22 type foundry and International House of Fonts announce its acquisition* of Toronto-based type foundry Canada Type's newest font design: Counter.

Designed by Canada Type principal Patrick Griffin, P22 Counter is a very geometric font based on parallel strokes. The Cursive and SwashAlts styles were based on the idea for an uncredited film face called Whitley, published by a little known English typesetting house in the early 1970s. Line & Hack are extrapolations of the above.

Each face is offered in basic OpenType (which has Central European language support) for only $19.95, or as a set of 4 for $49.95. A Counter Cursive Pro font that combines Cursive & SwashAlts is also included in the set or is available separately for $29.95. As an introductory special, you can get the full Counter font set for only $39.95.

*P22 has not actually acquired Canada Type or the font itself, we are simply the exclusive source for this new font from Patrick Griffin. If we didn’t confuse things too much, at least you read our email!

September Newness

New Platten Neu Family
Michael Clark Script font sale
New TypeCaster!

Introducing -- Platten Neu

The P22 Platten font family has been revisited and expanded by designer Colin Kahn. Platten is based on lettering found in German fountain pen practice books from the 1920s (you may have seen the similar Speedball books in the US). This round tip pen lettering is comparable to the basic forms used in grammar school teaching alphabets, but with a few original characteristics. The Italic version has even more of these unusual features. Geometric & simple yet casual & timeless. Perfect for many uses.

P22 Platten Neu
includes 6 Pro fonts (Light, Regular & Demibold) with many alternates and ligatures (over 500 glyphs in each font) in Roman & Italic with expanded Central European language coverage and Smallcaps (Roman only).

Special Introduction price for the month of September

A new, monthly feature on p22.com will be a revisiting of P22 fonts you may have missed.

Sweepy, Sneaky & Pooper Black
No, not 3 of Snow White's sidekicks, but rather 3 related script fonts from Calligrapher Michael Clark.

Pooper Black is based on a brush ethic and has an extreme axis that lends a certain amount of speed to the font while the lack of connectors "slows" it down. A wonderful face for packaging, titling, and short burst of text. Pooper Black has been seen takin’ care of business on shop ads and food packaging.

Sneaky is a connecting-script and sibling of Pooper Black that shares a similar flow and casual elegance. It features shared details and relative size so that with careful design, the two can be mixed and matched.

Sweepy (winner of a Type Director Club 2006 award) is a lighter, and connecting version of Sneaky. Sweepy is a brush script that is casual and fluid. In the expanded OpenType version Sweepy is loaded with alternate characters and ligatures that offer more flexible lettering options.

Get them for the month of September at a special price!

The P22 type preview tool, the TypeCaster has been revamped for easier previewing and better resolution. Now you can zoom in as well as out to see any given font in any given size with any of your own text. Give it a try!

P22 Backstory

We have been a bit lax in telling our own history. Occasionally people ask and we occasionally tell. Here is a recent article by Jessica Spring for Boxcar Presses new Flurry Journal and some coaxing from Jan Middendorp for Myfonts Creative Characters Newsletter reveals some little known facts about P22.
